Mariam al-Astrulabi, a Syrian woman born in the late 10th century, followed in her father's footsteps to become a scholar of astronomy. Her greatest achievement was the improvement of the ancient Greek astrolabe, transforming it into a more precise astronomical instrument. It served as a kind of ancient GPS, allowing for the determination of the positions of the sun, moon, and constellations, as well as the measurement of time. This enhancement required advanced and complex mathematical knowledge, yet Mariam al-Astrulabi did not receive a formal education in mathematics. Nevertheless, through persistent trial and error, Mariam succeeded! Her artistic craftsmanship should not be overlooked either. She utilized highly skilled metallurgy techniques to engrave intricate patterns on the astrolabe, making her one of the few documented Muslim female scientists in history.
